Could Inflammation be Harming Your Health?

Did You Know?

Inflammatory conditions are on the rise at an alarming rate! But what exactly IS inflammation?

The word inflammation comes from Latin "inflammo" which means "I set alight, I ignite". Inflammation is a part of your immune system's response to an insult, and it involves things like increased fluid and blood in the area, pain signals and fever. It's designed to make you stop stressing the area and focus on healing, and it helps you when it's there for a short time. For example, if you bang your knee, the tissue swells and more blood rushes in, so the knee feels hot. These inflammatory reactions help to clear damaged cells so your knee can return to normal more quickly.

The problems begin when inflammation becomes chronic and systemic, rather than focused on one area. It is the driving force behind diseases like arthritis, lupus, diabetes, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel, and colitis, to name a few. In these cases, inflammation takes on a life of its own and doesn't "turn off" like the example of the banged knee. When inflammation is chronic, it causes further deterioration of the body.

Your body's "tap on the shoulder"

Before a person develops a medical diagnosis like those above, the warning signs of inflammation appear. If you pay attention to these taps on the shoulder, you can avoid the 2 X 4 that comes next! Here are some of the signs you have inflammation:

  • Ongoing, irritating pain or aches in the body, like the joints or muscles (and no, it's not just a normal part of getting older!)

  • Allergies or asthma (especially when they keep getting worse)

  • Puffiness anywhere in the body

  • High blood pressure or blood sugar problems

  • Abdominal bloating

  • Ulcers and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (constipation or diarrhea)

  • Constant fatigue or lethargy

  • Skin problems or red, bloodshot eyes

Underlying causes

Inflammation doesn't just start for no reason. It is caused by irritants that your body is trying to get rid of, such as low levels of bacteria or yeast, toxic chemicals and heavy metals that have built up over time, or even exposure to mold. And, frankly, we live in an environment where there is no shortage of those irritants! So, what do you do to handle it? There are natural anti-inflammatory products (like turmeric) that might help you get some temporary relief. And there's definitely value in feeling better! But the real answer is to work on detoxification in a way that's appropriate for your individual situation. This could involve cleaning up your diet, drinking more water, sweating in a sauna, fasting, or using herbs.

Want to learn more? Vitality Project is giving a free seminar that will go deeper into the causes of inflammation AND ways you can heal from it. This will be held on Thursday August 25th at 7pm and is open to everyone, regardless of if you are a patient of our clinic or not. All you have to do is register by clicking this link. I look forward to digging deeper into the subject with you! And, as always, you will leave with tips you can go home and put into use.
